The Salt Flat is situated in Uyuni to the west of Potosí and to the south of the city of Oruro. It covers 12.000 Km2 and it is situated more than 3600 meters above the sea level.
The Uyuni Salt Flat is the biggest salt mirror of the world; it is famous because it presents a particular ecosystem formed by impressive plains of salt, colorful lagoons, canyons, cactus up to 10 meters high, different rocky formations and, of course, three flamingo species that can be normally observed in November.
This place is also known as “The mirror of the sky “. It is considered the biggest lithium reserve of Bolivia: it is estimated that it contains 64 thousand millions of salt tons. The salt plateau (120 meters deep) is formed by 11 layers that vary from 2 to 10 meters.
Thanks to several Tourism Operators, Agencies and Lodgings, nowadays, this natural wonder is becoming one of the main tourist attractions of Bolivia.
In fact, thanks to Incahuasi Tour Expeditions, in September 1993, William B Forney (member of the scientific and engineer team of the Administration Space and Aeronautics from The United States, who actually designed the space rocket that put Neil Armstrong on the moon) visited the majestic Uyuni Salt Flat. He was really amazed by his personal experience and the observation of wonderful landscapes. So, he wanted to share his incredible experiences by sending us his interesting tour photographs.
