The colonial epoch in Bolivia



In many cities of Bolivia some architecture relics of the time of the Spanish colonies are kept.
Among the most representative cities are Potosí, Sucre, and the north eastern region of Santa Cruz.

· In the Colonial days Potosí lodged 160.000 inhabitants (In those days, it was a greater population than that of London, Paris and Madrid). The cause for such crowding was the Rich Potosí Mountain, one of the greatest of silver filled all over the world.
The economic prosperity in those days left in Potosí a unique architecture heritage. It is churches represent the magnificence of the architecture and wealth of the colonies. For these reasons Potosí has been called the Natural and Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO.
· In the same manner, Sucre capital of the Department of Chuquisaca has kept buildings and churches that are from the colonial epoch, whose varied styles are studied and admired by amateurs and experts of architecture.
· In Bolivia, besides those of Potosí and Sucre there are the exceptional colonial buildings in the tropical territory of the country to the northeast of Santa Cruz department. A heritage of the Jesuit missions that survive in our days as a legacy of the half breed cultures and styles of the colonizers and colonized of the years from 1.691 to 1.760.
Another wealth of the colonial epoch is constituted by the sacred art works that are in the churches of the surrounding towns of Oruro, Potosí and Cochabamba, works that are from the late 16th and 17th centuries.
