Tourism in Santa Cruz city, Bolivia

The department of Santa Cruz with its capital Santa Cruz de la Sierra is located in the Amazon area of Bolivia and it has a natural wealth of extraordinary beauty.

Tourist attractiveness

· The Cathedral Museum of Sacred Art, where one can find a collection of religious art divided into four rooms: cut out in wood, liturgics ornaments, silver ware and picture gallery (besides jewelry and medals). The museum is located inside the Cathedral.
· The Arenal Ethnographic Museum, located on the Island of the Murals. It has a collection of utensils and decoration handicraft of the Guarayos, Chiquitanos, Ayoreos, Izoseños, Tupi-Guarani and the half-caste of the valleys.
. The Noel Kempff Mercado Natural History Museum, that depends on the Rene Moreno Autonomous University. It is a valuable collection of botanic samples, animals, fossils, rocks and minerals. The fossils of the some dinosaurs found not far from the city are outstanding.
· Casa de la Cultura, which is in activity since 1978 an offers lectures, theater works, concerts, movies, videos, courses and workshops, paint exhibits, photographs, sculpture and others. Besides, it has a library specialized in regional publications.

Another attraction in the city is the Zoological Park of South American Life, this park presents a variety collection of the animal life of South America, with valuable species that are not found in other zoos, like: the borochi or mane wolf (Chrysocyon brachiurus), the mount dog (Speothos venaticus) and the solitary hog (Catogonuswagneri).

· Cabañas del río Piraí. At a few minutes away from downtown and a set of rustically buildings, many small restaurants run that offer a wide variety of samples of the delicious cruceña (from Santa Cruz) cooking. It is a ideal place for a picnic.

Attractions of the surroundings of the city

. The Samaipata Fort. This fortress, is the most important architectural spot of the oriental land. It was nominated the Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. There diverse pre-Colombian cultures to finally be used as an Inkan ceremonial site were settled down. These ruins present the techniques of pre-Colombian architecture such as the rock sculpting and the zoomorphic representations.

· Las Misiones Jesuitas. The Jesuit Missions, a trip toward the missions of San Javier and Concepción, the most important ones of the Eastern Bolivia!. Going over the low lands of the East, and agriculture and cattle area, visit Sapocó Lagoon and the dam of the same name where one will be able to take a bath in its crystal-clear waters.

. Cotoca, a place where Santa Cruz city settled down at its moving from Chiquitos. Here is the famous sanctuary of the Virgin of Cotoca, protector of the department of Santa Cruz. Cotoca is 20 kilometers away from the city and it is an interesting rustic pottery center and it has a regional culinary tasteful offer.

. Palmira Lagoon, this lagoon is located at 8 Km. to the south of the city, behind the Petroleum Refineries of Palmasola. Here the enthusiastic cruceño public gathers up on weekends to watch the Jet Ski races.

· Lomas de Arena del Palmar. They are big dunes or medanos of sand without vegetation. They are located at some 16 kilometers away to the south of the city. At the foot dunes, lagoons of crystal - clear water are found. Swimming and camping can be alternated with hiking by the extensive sand dunes, with the horse-riding or surfing and the watching of birds of the pampa (flat land).

· Espejillos, 40 Km. away from the city. It is a very agreeable recreation spot for its tranquility and beauty. Twenty meter high crystal-clear waterfalls. They form up stepping up waterfalls and give way to wells and quiet rivers.

· Porongo, located at 18 Km. from the city. It is on Pirai riverbank. This picturesque population keeps its aspect and customs that characterized the city before its explosive growth in the last 40 years.

Ecotourist attractiveness

In the extensive area of the plains we find national parks, you forest reserve and whole year navigable rivers appropriate for the canotaje practice and fishing sport. It is also possible to carry out safaris, expeditions inside the Amazonia.

. Amboró National Park, nearby the populations of Warnes, Montero and Portachuelo getting further into the magic forest of eastern Bolivia on reaches Buena Vista and after it Amboró, a unique ecological park with endemic vegetation and animal life. In this zone ecotourism activities can be carried out, photographic sections and camping.

. Noel Kempff Mercado National park, in which an abundant and extraordinary diversity of species of flora and fauna is found. A dream trip for the eco-tourist that he will not find in any other part, the great variety of habitants gathered in one only place, woody landscapes, plateaus and flood-prone zones, with water falls and wildness, rivers and bays where one can watch the fauna of the place.

· The Pantanal, unique destination in the world where it is possible to marvel with the immensity of their forests, swamps and the wealth of their flora and fauna, photographic safaris can be carried out during the trips, flora observation and day or night fauna, walks in boat and to horse, besides sports and occupational fishing.

Ethnics groups

They are four big ethnic and linguistic groups divided in many tribes and nations: the Chiriguanos or Guarani, Arawacos or Sirionós, Chiquitanos, Guarayos.
